Sometimes when I travel I seem to only care about eating, about what kind of food I might find to put in my mouth, or what I might drink to vary the boredom of ice water glass after glass. And it's true, that's all I care about. I don't care about landscapes, old buildings, museums, or charming local customs. I only care about the food.
Suddenly, as so often happens on car trips, the mundane becomes terrifying. Crossing the highest parts of I-80 brought us directly into a snow storm. My white-knuckled response was so typical of my experiences driving, an inevitable sequence anywhere in a winter car trip. My first response is always "Get off the road! Get off the road!" I'd gladly stop at any hotel we pass. I am as filled with fear as a soldier in combat. It's not an inappropriate response; the danger is real. Even to the unimaginative death is all around; sometimes we even see cars sliding off the road. I curse myself for getting caught in this again. How could I have agreed to this? If I can just get back to my house I will never, never do it again.

Miffle was a stray who haunted our porch for a while. We began to feed him; our regular cat Philip looked askance. Eventually we enticed the stray inside and being the sadists that we were immediately took him to the vet for a bunch of injections. Vermin-free and home again, he slowly eased himself into our routine, even with Phil who didn't let the new smaller cat bother him that much. They eventually got closer. We were concerned about what might happen; Carolyn once had a cat who was chased to the top of the fridge—by his sister!—and then lived there for months in exile.
Miffle didn't stay as long as we would have liked; he got cancer and died of it less than a year after he came in from the cold. Carolyn said the guy could never catch a break.
